SEM Imaging.
What might we be looking at here? Is it a water carved cliff? Is it the terrain of an alien planet? No. You'd probably never guess.
It's the surface of a vinyl record! (I'm aware I'm showing my age, lol). CDs and records are recorded music via pits like the one shown in the photo. This image was made visible via Scanning Electron Microscope imaging. SEM produces images by scanning the sample with electrons! The interactions are then picked up and the image is formed.
Google "SEM images" to find some pretty cool, creepy,....and gross images!!
